Paint Recycling in Medford, OR

Paint Recycling

The Oregon paint recycling stewardship program was enacted by the Oregon Legislature in July 2010, making Oregon the first state to pass legislation regarding the collection, processing and disposal of leftover paint. Drake’s Paint & Supply was one of the first paint stores to participate in the program, voluntarily. We gladly accepting unwanted and leftover paint year round.

Acceptable Items

Drake’s Paint accepts the following:

  • House paints and primers (latex or oil-based)
  • Stains
  • Deck and concrete sealers
  • Clear finishes (e.g., varnishes, shellac)

The architectural paint products we accept are referred to as “PaintCare Products” and must be in containers that are no larger than 5 gallons in size. PaintCare Products must be in their original container with original manufacturer label and secure lid. PaintCare does not accept spray paint (aerosols) or anything in containers larger than 5 gallons. We cannot accept open or leaking cans. Please refer to our acceptable vs non-acceptable detailed product list below.

So what happens to recycled paint? Oil-based paint is burned for energy; the good latex paint is recycled and the not-so-good latex is processed in California and used as an additive in concrete.

Recycle Fees

There is no charge for dropping off paint at a Drake’s Paint & Supply store in either Medford or Grants Pass, OR.

The PaintCare® recycle fee is not a tax; it does not go to the state to operate the program. The fee is also not a deposit; you don’t get it back when you drop off paint.

Fees fund all aspects of the paint stewardship program. This includes paint collection, transportation, recycling, public outreach, and program administration, and to manage “legacy” paint, material that has been accumulating in homes and businesses from before the program started.

The recycle fee is intended to cover the costs of collection centers and the recycling process. Drake’s does not add any additional handling fees for this service. We are just doing our part in helping to minimize the effects on our environment.

PaintCare® programs are funded by a fee (referred to as the PaintCare fee) which is applied to the purchase price of new paint sold in the state. The fee is paid to PaintCare by paint manufacturers and is then added to the wholesale and retail purchase price of paint, passing the cost of managing post-consumer paint to everyone who buys paint. You may see a line item on your receipt or invoice for each container of paint you purchase. Each container fee is calculated on the check out page when you purchase paint online. Contact us if you have more questions!

Effective October 1, 2018, the fees are based on container size as follows:

Container Size Fee*
Half pint or smaller $0.00
Larger than half pint up to smaller than 1 gallon $0.45
1 gallon up to 2 gallons $0.95
Larger than 2 gallons up to 5 gallons $1.95

*Fees are automatically calculated when you purchase paint online or in the store and are included in your order total.
